Born For it: Build on the skills that make you a Born Salesperson

Updated: Oct 16, 2023

You are a born salesperson, just not made yet. Think about it, we are salesmen for from the moment we were born. When you were a baby you were selling your mother on needing more food. As an adult try to get someone out of bed in the middle of the night and bring you food!

As an adolescent you were selling your parents on sleeping over at a friend’s house or staying up late or why it’s a good idea for your parents to buy you a certain toy. As a spouse you are selling your significant other to get to a certain restaurant or staying in. Perhaps making a decision on a big purchase. As a parent selling your kids on why they need to go to bed at a certain time or why they need to brush their teeth. It’s all there, you sell every day. Persuasion and negotiation are everyday occurrences. The problem is you do not view this as selling.

Telling people why they need to meet with you. Interrupting a stranger and convincing them on an idea or to change their mind takes skill and practice. You inherently know how to do it you will just need to be conscious of how to do it.

What is selling?

Selling is having your idea:

  • Accepted

  • Adopted or

  • Approved

How to do it.

  • Providing Value: Why people need your product or service is up to you. What do you bring to the table and how will what you can provide make your customer lives better? This is case you must present. How you present your case and lay out your plan is up to show and ultimately prove. You have to convince your prospect.

  • Help. Its your obligation to help people with their problems or help them make their lives better. Its your responsibility to let people know what you can do for them and how you can make a difference.

  • Asking. Asking questions, asking for the sale, asking for time. Building relationships, building trust, connecting with people. Don’t focus so much on perfection. Focus on doing the actions. Once you have earned the right by providing valve and showing the customer how you can help them through asking the right question you will have earn the right to ask for the sale.

There are multiple skill sets to combine with Sales Efficacy. Each skill can be practiced and learned to make a more effective salesperson. You were born for this! There is no special sauce or magic bullet to make you better other than just putting in the effort. These skills maybe are not even groundbreaking in the sense that there may be nothing new here maybe they are to you. At the very least they will shed light on the competences that you can focus your time on to gain better knowledge and increase your skill set.
