Build Your Legacy

When you look back on your life you will be known for something. This legacy that you will be known for long after you have passed is up to you. Without the building blocks or foundation to build this legacy, you will fall short of your potential. To be great takes effort and subsequently being not great takes effort as well. This decision and how you execute this decision will depend on the insight and tools that you have available to you to leave a positive or sad legacy.

Connecting all the dots

The tools and habits described in proactive actions are there to help you build your legacy. Compound actions focus on the little things that will grow into big results. And core competencies enable you to think about your growth as a person and the impact that you have on others.


What are you doing all this for? Think of what you will leave behind, you can’t take anything with you, but it is what you leave behind that matters. You can’t leave much behind if you don’t build anything worth leaving. I have a big aspiration for my children. I want to give them more. More than I ever had. Perhaps you have the same goal. You probably would like to be remembered for something and you most certainly don’t have to be passed on for that to happen. What takes a lifetime to build can be destroyed in 4 seconds. It takes hard work, dedication, and time to build a long-lasting legacy.

If you’re in it for yourself you will have a tough time building a legacy and, in the end, your effort will be all for nothing. What you do for others to make a difference in their lives will build your legacy.


Questions to ask yourself when you think about how you have lived.

1. How do people know you now?

2. Are you happy with their description?

3. How do you make others around you feel?

4. Whom have you taught?

5. Who have you helped?

6. How will people know you after you are gone?
