I recently purchased a condo in Hilton Head Island SC with my family. We went there for the first time as a family vacation we really enjoyed it. I've been toying around with purchasing a vacation home to use as a rental property for some time. We both figure that Hilton Head Island would be a good place to check out to see if it's something that we wanted to do or a place where we wanted to be. We did we loved it and we couple the vacation we're looking for vacation homes for the week that we were there working vacations are always the best way to make the most of your time. But it's not the best way to enjoy most of your time.
The whole week was pretty hectic, we made an offer in a couple of places that ended up falling through because the market was so competitive. But as fate were to have it on the very last day, we found a for sale by the owner made. We contacted the realtor and within four hours we had an offer in and accepted all before lunch. It was amazing so we celebrated our last day on the beach with champagne and didn't worry about it much. It happened so fast!
We recently went back to Hilton Head Island to stay in our vacation home. Roughly around the 1-year anniversary of our purchase. This time around was much more enjoyable because the stress of trying to find a house to buy was gone. We had more time to relax and enjoy our time more. We spent more time walking on the beach and getting to know the island. We passed the same places, went to the same restaurants, and walked past the hotel where we stayed. The beach house is a fantastic place to stay, and we have lunch at the Tiki Hut like we did the year before. It was surreal. I had a different mindset. The mindset went from vacationing to being a new resident. You see things differently and you appreciate things that you didn't know you had to.
What was profound was how much has changed in one year we are looking at condos to buy staying in a hotel and at restaurants this the year before. Now as we walk by these places, I stopped my kids and said they look how much has changed in a year. We didn't have to stay at a hotel. We headed back to our condo. We didn't have to eat at the restaurant, we could eat in our kitchen. We are now technically residents of this place, and we could live here when the year before we were just mere vacationers sightseeing trying to enjoy the beach.
I told them if you put focus into something and want something to happen you can make it happen. It was a lesson for me, and I tried to make it a lesson for my kids. Of course, it didn't hit home as hard as it did for them as it did for me. My wife and I had saved a lot of money and we took a lot of risks to make that happen. We worked hard to find the right place. We worked hard to get it listed and rented out for that year. And there was a lot of emotion tied to the closing of the condo. Which almost didn't happen.
But we stuck with it and persevered. We continue to host and enjoy our vacation rental property. It’s been a great year and we hope to enjoy many more.
