What Happens After You Achieve Your Goal?

Updated: Sep 20, 2023

There may come a time when you have achieved your goal or “made it.” Then you will find yourself asking “Now what?” to stay motivated is difficult when you have reached a goal especially when you put all of your time focus energy and effort into achieving it. It’s easy to fall into the trap of nonmotivation and get bored. Understand your why and remind yourself of why you wanted to achieve the goal in the first place. Keeping your why in mind is the key to expanding your effort to keep going.

After you make a billion dollars are you just supposed to throw in the towel and sit on a beach because You “made it” No billionaires don’t stop and give up and it would be much of life if they did. They run on purpose. Humans are made to serve and work. Working with a purpose is the key to fulfillment. The money along with the work toward a purpose is just a perk.

Continuous Goal Setting

You’re limited to your experience and your mindset based on your ability and skill. What you think is a big goal now will not be a big goal in the future because you will have more experience toward your initial goal than you did when you started. Once you achieve your goal you will find you can go further or achieve more because you will have more experience you can draw from.

You should always be looking for the next thing or working on multiple goals at once. Or once you hit your mark, raise the bar on the same goal. Always strive for betterment. The only end game is death. Are you going to retire and then sit around all day? That’s not much of a retirement, is it?

“Get busy living or get busy dying” –Andy Dufresne, Shawshank Redemption

Continuous goal setting is a powerful tool for achieving personal and professional growth. It involves regularly assessing where you are, and where you want to be, and creating a plan to get there. However, it's not just about setting goals once and forgetting about them. To truly reach your potential, it's important to set your goals higher and aim for more.

Impossible Goal Setting

Attainable goals are too easy, or for a better term, too light, because you will underestimate your capability looking for the easy win or fear of not accomplishing your goal. Take your attainable goal and multiply it two times, five times, or ten times. Strive for an outcome and always work toward the goal. You won’t be let down if you “fail.” You will be surprised if you get more than what you bargained for. Why leave money on the table? Go big or go home.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.” –Norman Vincent Peale

When setting goals, it’s important to set your sights high. Setting higher goals than you think you can achieve will give you more motivation. When you set a goal that challenges you and pushes you out of your comfort zone, you're more likely to feel motivated and engaged. This can be because achieving the goal will be a significant accomplishment, or because you'll be learning new skills and developing new capabilities. Either way, setting your sights high can give you the drive you need to succeed. Setting your sights higher for goals will lead to increased learning. When you set your goals higher, you'll often need to acquire new skills and knowledge to achieve them. This can lead to significant learning and growth, both personally and professionally. Not only will you develop new competencies, but you'll also become more adaptable and resilient, which can be invaluable in today's rapidly changing world. In the end when you have achieved someone that you once thought impossible you will have greater satisfaction. When you achieve a goal that you've worked hard for, the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment can be incredibly rewarding. Setting your goals higher means that you'll be accomplishing more and experiencing greater levels of satisfaction and fulfillment.

Strategies for setting your sights higher.

  1. Challenge yourself: Look for goals that are challenging but achievable. They should require you to stretch yourself and work hard, but not be so impossible that you become discouraged. Consider setting a mix of short-term and long-term goals, and break them down into smaller steps to make them more manageable.

  2. Be specific: When setting your goals, be as specific as possible. Instead of setting a goal to "improve your sales performance," for example, set a goal to "increase your sales by 10% in the next quarter." This will help you focus your efforts and measure your progress more effectively.

  3. Get feedback: It can be helpful to get feedback from others when setting your goals. Talk to colleagues, mentors, or coaches, and get their input on what you should aim for. They may be able to offer insights or suggestions that you haven't considered.

  4. Take action: Once you've set your goals, take action immediately. Start working on the steps you've identified, and hold yourself accountable for making progress. Regularly review your goals and adjust them as necessary to ensure that they remain challenging but achievable.

When goal setting it is important to set goals that are focused and aligned with what you want to achieve. It is also important to stay focused on achieving those goals. With a lack of focus, you can easily accomplish nothing. Staying focused and achieving goals requires a combination of discipline, perseverance, and effective strategies.

Here are some strategies that can help you stay focused and achieve your goals:

  1. Create a clear vision: Before setting your goals, take the time to envision what you want to achieve and why it is important to you. Having a clear vision of your desired outcome can help you stay motivated and focused.

  2. Break down your goals: Break down your larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks. This can make the goals feel less overwhelming and help you stay focused on making progress.

  3. Prioritize your tasks: Determine which tasks are most important and prioritize them accordingly. Focus your time and energy on the tasks that will have the greatest impact on achieving your goals.

  4. Establish a routine: Establishing a routine can help you create a sense of structure and consistency in your day-to-day activities. This can help you stay focused and make progress toward your goals.

  5. Eliminate distractions: Identify any distractions preventing you from staying focused and take steps to eliminate them. This may include turning off notifications on your phone or finding a quiet workspace.

  6. Hold yourself accountable: Set deadlines for your tasks and hold yourself accountable for meeting them. This can help you stay motivated and focused on making progress toward your goals.

  7. Celebrate your successes: Take the time to acknowledge and celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may be. Celebrating your progress can help you stay motivated and focused on achieving your larger goals.

Staying focused and achieving your goals takes time and effort. By adopting these strategies and staying committed to your goals, you can increase your chances of success and create a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment in your life.
